Jewel: Man-Eater Heads to Capital Hill
I have a great deal of mixed emotion about Jewel.
She represents a mixture of dangerous femme fatale profiles that I have known through my life. Smart, cunning, well spoken, with a calm seductive poise which after a few seconds can leave an opponent befuddled- unsure of the next moment. On top of that, she writes and performs songs that hit hard in the places that matter most: The Heart, and The Truth. I tend to watch my step when involved with these types of women. But when they hang their hat on a social cause with a fierce determination I get jacked-up, and follow through with all of the support that I can.
Jewel will travel to Capital Hill during the week of September 18th to push passage of a bill that will allow women to obtain additional in-hospital care after a mastectomy, remedying a common practice called: "Drive-Through" Mastectomies. The previous versions of this legislation have stalled in committee (the Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act of 2005 (S 910/HR 1849).
Now, I ask you. Why would a bill like this stall in committee?
The reason is the same reason that health care has dissipated over the last 25 years, since the Regan reorganization of the health care system to eliminate it's dependance on tax dollars. Let people die to save a few bucks (then run up the deficit with wars). This bill represents a chip against the bottom line of the insurance companies who, again, would rather let people die to make a few extra bucks.
Jewel knows what she is fighting against here, and she did not blast onto the scene empty handed. She compiled a list of 12 million signatures before making calls to Capital Hill. This is "Jewel's Style". But even with this, she has a very hard fight ahead. I encourage everybody to support her by doing two things: sign her pledge of support, and write an email to your U.S. Senator, supporting the passage of the pending bill.
